چکیده

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy has been used to probe the irreversible chemisorption of C6H 50H and 1,4-C6H 4(0H)2 on a thin amorphous film of Al20 3• This spectroscopy yields a representation of the vibronic excitations of the chemical bonds in the adspecies, i.e., the tunneling spectra are analogous to ir spectra. The C6H 50H is found to adsorb predominately as C6H 50with a small amount of adsorption as C6H 50H. The 1,4-C~4(0H)2 is found to adsorb predominately as C6H4(0H)Oand perhaps to a smaller extent as C6H40f-. Extensive hydrogen bonding is observed among adsorbates and between adsorbates and the hydroxylated alumina surface.

Characterization of metal oxide surfaces and thin semiconductor films by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy.

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) is a unique surface and interface analytical technique using electron tunneling through a metal/insulator/metal tunneling junction at cryogenic temperatures. It gives the vibrational spectrum of a very thin (nm) insulator film and the adsorbed species on it. The high sensitivity, good resolution, and wide spectral range inherent in IETS enable us...

C-H activation and metalation at electrode surfaces: 2,3-dimethyl-1,4-dihydroxybenzene on Pd(pc) and Pd(111) studied by TLE, HREELS and DFT.

Previous studies, based on thin-layer electrochemistry (TLE), in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and density functional theory (DFT) computations, on the chemical adsorption of hydroquinone from aqueous solutions onto atomically smooth Pd (and Pt) electrode surfaces indicated two modes of attachment that depended upon the s...

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy for topological insulators.

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy is a powerful spectroscopy that allows one to investigate the nature of local excitations and energy transfer in the system of interest. We study inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy for topological insulators and investigate the role of inelastic scattering on the Dirac node states on the surface of topological insulators. Local inelastic scatteri...

Tunneling spectroscopy studies of treated aluminum oxide tunnel barrier layers

We report scanning tunneling microscopy and ballistic electron emission microscopy studies of the electronic states of the uncovered and chemisorbed-oxygen covered surface of AlOx tunnel barrier layers. These states change when chemisorbed oxygen ions are moved into the oxide by either flood gun electron bombardment or by thermal annealing. While untreated samples exhibit band tails extending t...

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and ballistic electron emission microscopy studies of aluminum-oxide surfaces

We report scanning tunneling microscopy ~STM! results that reveal localized features on the exposed surface of amorphous aluminum oxide that are regularly present but which cannot be uniquely identified with STM as electronic defects or surface adsorbents. With the simultaneous use of ballistic electron emission microscopy ~BEEM! we can examine the electronic transport properties of these local...
